FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • How long does a thatch roof last in typical Southern African conditions?

The answer should be between 20 to 30 years depending on climatic conditions. Because of the ridiculous quality that has been available in the market place for the past 10 years, the general public's conception is that a thatch roof only lasts between 6 to10 years. This is unfortunately true for the work of 99% of so called thatch experts.

  • Why Cape Thatch Reed?

Cape Thatch Reed dramatically enhances the internal appearance of the roof. It is also dust-free compared to grass as a ceiling layer. An added advantage of Cape Reed is that it is much more difficult to catch fire than grass.

  • What about bird damage?

This is the single most common problem in South Africa today. It is a fact that almost all so-called bird damage is in fact poor workmanship. Incorrect stitching under the ridge capping causes a weak area under the ridge, loose enough for a bird to carry it of.

Our specialist team of consultants headed by Hanro de Jager, handle more than 1500m² of thatching contracts every month.

With their combined experience of more than sixty years you as a prospective buyer can rest assured that you will get not only the best quality thatching that money can buy, but also the best design and advise. Special arrangements can be made with the consultants to have the roof designed in 3D CAD.

    Design

Advanced design techniques are employed when doing thatching against an existing house or building. We make extensive use of CAD (Computer Aided Design) before even moving on site. If it can't be drawn it can't be built.

Winter-harvested grass

Whether your project is done in winter or summer, we only use grass harvested in winter. If a roof is thatched with grass harvested in the summer the roof will not last 5 years! Companies that do not have storage facilities use the wrong grass. The use of "summer grass" is the single biggest reason why thatch roofs do not large. Redruth Thatching has enough grass to supply our huge local demand as well as to our agents' abroad. We invite you to visit our Gauteng depot and inspect our grass supply.
